On the Mark
 Issue: # 2 2nd Qtr/2009

From the President

Contributing to the improvement of patient safety is the chief focus of our Company.  While the use of our software at any level positively impacts patient safety, our top tier, individual instrument management, has the greatest benefit.  Individual instrument management allows our facilities to track the exact instruments used in a particular case to the exact patient and accordingly any subsequent cases where the instruments have been used.  Our case tracking functionality means uncertainty is eliminated from any surgical instrument recalls.

Obviously, Censis is not alone in recognizing the importance of unique device identification as it relates to surgical instruments and patient safety.  In a recent response to the Food and Drug Administration's request for comments on a unique device identification (UDI) system, the AHA and AHRMN stated "Medical devices that pose a higher risk to patients, such as implantable items, infusion pumps, surgical instruments and cardiac or respiratory monitors, should include more detailed information.  Additional information should include serial number identifying the exact device..."        (Visit www.Censis.net  "News and Events" for a copy of the letter to the FDA.)

While no one outside of the FDA can predict if the FDA will require individual instrument tracking in the next few years we believe it is not a question of if, it is a question of when.  Accordingly we continue to invest our research and development efforts towards additional functionality, in this area and applying scannable marks on the instruments that will last as long as the useful life of the instrument.  In addition to the hospitals and surgery centers utilizing our tray management and count sheet technology we have over 100 facilities in the US, Canada and Australia utilizing our individual instrument level functionality.   We are proud that we are the industry leaders in individual instrument management and are committed to being the company that brings advances in this area to the market.

Technology

One of the new features available in our May software upgrade is the ability to set up shortcut buttons that will display in the header of all Censitrac pages.  The feedback from our customers that have implemented this feature is that their technicians "love" it.  It saves them a few steps required to navigate the menu screens in Censitrac, and when you multiply that by all the work a technician does during the course of every day, it adds up to a big plus in terms of ease of use for them.  Like many things in life, it's the little things that mean a lot!

As always, if you need more information about how to set up these shortcuts for your site, just call our Help Desk at 888-877-3010, Opt # 1

Lexington deploys Case Tracking for Patient Safety

Lexington Case Cart

A CS technician from Lexington Medical Center assembles a case cart and then scans a Case ID barcode using Censitrac.  The Case Tracking feature within Censitrac associates all of the containers as well as instruments scheduled for the procedure to the patient.

"The Case Tracking feature in Censitrac is an important and helpful tool for Lexington Medical Center.  It allows us to make sure we have everything we need for surgeries and lets us know which instruments were used on each patient.  The Case Tracking feature streamlines our work and enhances the delivery of health care at our hospital."

"Censitrac is a great teaching tool, as well as user friendly.  In addition, since we have started tracking our instruments and equipment, we have saved money on lost items and repairs.  We know immediately if something is missing and can search for it before it is inadvertently thrown out.  We can find items easier and know where things are at all times.  It truly is the best thing for any area that needs to track instruments or equipment.  If any question arises from the OR about the set, we can track where it is, when it was sterilized, and on what patient it was used on any given day.
Another great feature is that the upgrades are company, as well as, customer driven."

"I am very glad we decided to go with Censis for our system.  We did research other systems and Censis offered the most for the cost and had the most to offer."

Chemical Marking

Our Chemical Marking process has been an over whelming success.  To date we have implemented this marking process in over 25 hospitals and continue to be the industry leader for instrument marking.  This process enables marking instruments in the hardest to reach areas and round surface areas that were impossible in the past.  We can also apply text to instruments now for quick identification and eliminate the need for costly tape and the associated application.
