On the Mark
 Issue: # 3 3rd Qtr/2009

From the President

Since our inception Censis Technologies has taken pride in being the market innovator for surgical instrument management.  Censis was the first Company to perfect individual instrument management and now has over 100 facilities utilizing Censitrac at the individual instrument level.  To support this functionality we have developed instrument marking techniques that we believe are as close as possible to providing a "permanent" mark.

In addition our joint development efforts with Steris resulted in Censitrac being  the only software capable of a true electronic interface to Steris equipment in the SPD as well as the OR.

Our dedication to being the market innovator is a continuing effort.  In the near future we will be releasing a new product which will provide management tools for endoscope reprocessing.  This product will employ detailed functionality such as access to comprehensive reprocessing instructions; track receipt, testing and disinfectant processing by individual scope; as well as the ability to record the particular case in which a particular scope is utilized.

As another example of our innovative efforts we will soon be deploying the tracking of equipment and surgical instrument trays utilizing RFID technology at a client's facility.  I will provide details about this functionality in a future newsletter.

With our web based delivery model we are able to support our customers with little or no involvement from the facilities' IT departments.  We have 3 or more new releases each year and since all of our clients are running the same software, system maintenance for each facility is seamless.  At Censis we remain committed to bringing our clients the most robust and innovative instrument management system available while ensuring that the system remains flexible and extremely user friendly.

Censis to attend and show at the 22nd Annual "Managing Today's OR Suite" Conference in Las Vegas

Caesars Palace, in Las Vegas, NV, is the location of this year's 22nd annual Managing Today's OR Suite (MTORS) Conference on October 7th and 8th.  This year, MTORS will include the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Leadership Specialty Assembly meeting. To meet your goal of delivering the right instrument to the right patient at the right time, suggest to your OR leadership that they can learn more about the benefits of Censitrac® at this year's conference by visiting the Censis booth.  We are located in booth number 513, right beside the STERIS® booth.

The OR staff's acceptance and usage of Censitrac® is a critical part of knowing where certain trays and surgical instrumentation are located within the Perioperative loop thus increasing the chances for patient safety and surgeon satisfaction.

Censitrac®, and its ability to store all sterilization records electronically both in the OR and CS, remains the only instrument management application capable of eliminating all manual documentation associated with a load and replacing it with a complete electronic sterilization management system. Imagine being able to demonstrate to your OR department the time savings associated with connecting the OR sterilizers through "Flash Tracker" to the Censitrac® application.

If you are not taking advantage of this huge benefit, please contact our Help Desk or your Censis sales representative at 888-877-3010 Opt 2, for a full electronic record keeping demonstration.

Please send this to your OR leadership who might be attending this show.

Technology

Censitrac® provides up to 60 standard reports and charts, depending on the tier of software that you subscribe to.  And since each customer can have unique reporting and analytic requirements, the ability to customize any of the standard Censitrac® reports is a very powerful tool.  Reports can be customized to filter to a specified subset of data, select the order in which the report will be sorted, add or delete columns of data on the report, etc.  Each of the custom reports can be saved for future use.  A custom report can also be made available to other users to run, although they will not have permission to update or delete the original version.

For example, a new report titled "Sterilizer Load Summary" was added to our standard report module earlier this year for most of our software tiers.  It provides a tally by sterilizer of the volume of containers and peel packs processed for a specified time period.  By using the customization feature to look at only cycles = "FLASH", you can easily generate a report that allows you to analyze trends for that activity.

Based on customer feedback, Censis continues to add fields of data to our standard reports for use in customization to make them even more flexible and beneficial for you.

As always, if you need more information about our reporting module, just call our Help Desk at 888-877-3010, Opt # 1

Warm boot ?    Soft Reset ?    Hard Reset ?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are familiar with these terms, chances are you have PDA device for scanning your sterilizer loads or scanning inventory to storage locations.

Many of the errors occuring during regular operation with these PDA devices can be prevented simply by making sure that the batteries are charged.  When not in use, please make sure the PDA is placed back into the charging base station.  If the battery is low in charge, the PDA will sometimes appear to freeze on a certain screen and even performing a "Warm boot" (soft reset) will not bring it back to life.  We find this to be more prevalent in wireless environments since manual syncs are not required.  Remember that the batteries in these PDA's are not much different from any other rechargeable battery you may have used with other devices.  They all have a certain life span and need to be replaced from time to time.   On most charging bases there is an empty slot to place a replacement battery.  Purchase extra batteries and store them here so you will have in case you need them.

Helpful Tip:  It is recommended by the manufacturer to do a "warm reboot" (soft reset) at the beginning of each shift.

If you are in need of a replacement battery, please call our Help Desk to order.  The Censis part number is listed below along with the manufacturer's part number if you want to use your normal vendors for purchasing.

If you have lost the stylus to your PDA, we have those in stock as well.

To order these batteries or for any other customer service needs , just call our Help Desk at 888-877-3010, Opt # 1

Featured Hospital - St. Thomas Hospital  (Nashville, TN)

"In the past we assembled instruments based on a document that we called a count sheet," said Pat Stefanik, Registered Nurse and Central Sterile Manager at Saint Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee. "This task was complicated by the wide range of individual preferences among the different surgeons and by the large number of non-traditional instruments that are used by our surgeons."

"From the first day that we started using Censitrac® we saw a substantial reduction in the number of errors," Stefanik said. "Just as important, we now know where every instrument set is located. Sometimes the OR will call and say that an instrument is missing. In most cases, I will look it up in Censitrac® and discover that it was scanned and put into the set that was sent to the OR. I will let the OR know and in most cases they will look around and find it in the OR."
